Shoppers looking for a manual transmission will have to look elsewhere. By standardizing the Geartronic transmission, Volvo hoped to appeal to two consumer bases simultaneously: those who want an automatic transmission and those who want a manual transmission. If you’ll never use the Geartronic’s automatic option, the BMW 1-Series, Volkswagen GTI, Volvo C30 and Acura TSX offer manual transmissions.
Start/Stop is a Volvo invention which is able to do its job thanks to the addition of a special, compact battery that has been designed to provide support to the main battery by means of offering extra power. This unusual battery combination means that the S40 restarts quickly and smoothly, while also allowing the audio system to run uninterrupted while at a stop. Air-conditioning powers down when the engine goes off, but quickly kicks back on if needed.
